The most convincing lie I ever told myself was that I knew what was wrong in my marriage. I had a name for it. Everybody does. When you cannot explain the hollow spot, you do not sit in it and wait for clarity. You reach for the closest thing that fits the shape and you hold on for dear life. Meanwhile the real one is still down there, usually a lot closer to the surface than you would guess, sitting in the place where you do not quite have the words yet.
